Sophomore Summer Reading 2008
Class of 2011
The Science Department is assigning a summer reading for all 2008-2009 sophomores. All incoming sophomores are to read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. The book is available in paperback at any major bookstore. Students need to complete their reading by the first day of school (Friday, August 15, 2008). This reading is mandatory for ALL sophomores, and you will be tested over the book’s material on the first day of school. This reading is IN ADDITION to the reading assigned in your sophomore English course. Sophomores enrolled in any Advanced Placement Classes have an additional reading assignment. Your reading assignment this summer is to read two books written by the major party candidates for the presidency in 2008: John McCain and Barack Obama. The books are Worth the Fighting For: The Education of an American Maverick and the Heroes Who Inspired Him by John McCain and Mark Salter and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream by Barack Obama.
Advanced Placement World History Summer Reading Assignment (Worthington)
For your summer AP World History assignment, students will read the novel Thing’s Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.
In Things Fall Apart Achebe addresses his own complex history as a Nigerian born to Christian parents whilst under British rule. This is achieved through the character of Okonkwo, a village leader, who strives to maintain the traditional rituals and religion of the tribe, in the face of the complex interactions brought by British rule. The book addresses issues of culture, gender, language and religion, amongst many others, in detailing the consequences that colonialism brought upon Africa.
The following questions are due by noon on Friday August 8th without exception. Note that this is one week before school starts. Papers can be submitted in one of two ways.

Primary Source Analysis: The Slave Experience
Your assignment this summer is to read two slave narratives and write an analytical essay on a topic of your choosing concerning an important theme of antebellum slavery as seen in the two narratives. Your assigned readings are the two most famous American slave narratives, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself, and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriet Jacobs (writing as Linda Brent).

Junior Summer Reading 2008
Class of 2010
The Social Studies Department is assigning a summer reading for all 2008-2009 juniors. All incoming juniors are to read Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself. The narrative is available at any major bookstore; however, be sure to check the title as Douglass wrote several books in his lifetime. Students need to complete their reading by the first day of school (Friday, August 15, 2008). This reading is mandatory for ALL juniors. Juniors enrolled in Advanced Placement U. S. History have an additional reading assignment that is available from their sophomore history teacher. Juniors enrolled in any Advanced Placement Classes have an additional reading assignment. A one page précis of any article (10 pages or longer) from any reputable magazine. (Consider using Harpers, Atlantic Monthly or The New Yorker)
AND
Write a review of any movie (current release) you see this summer. Assume you are writing a popular review for a general audience, not a literary tract for an English teacher. Describe the film (not summarize), its purpose and its success or lack of success. Find movie reviews in newspapers/magazines and use one as a model for your own work. Attach a photo copy of such a review to your paper.
Limit: 2 pages, typed, double-spaced.
THIS WORK MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. BE PREPARED TO TAKE A TEST ON THE SUMMER READING AS WELL.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT:
Read the following poem and complete the four step process as explained:
1. Do a close reading of the work.
2. Annotate the work, using the margin to call attention to words or phrases that catch your eye, or to write questions that you might have.
3. Read over your annotations, looking for your most interesting or powerful ideas.
4.Write a response to the work in a different genre: an essay, a short story, a letter to the author or a character in the work, or rewrite the work from a different point of view.
You will be required to turn in the annotated poem and your own original response to the poem on the first day of class. Your work must be typed, double spaced and worthy of AP student status!

The English Department is assigning summer reading for the Senior Class of 2009. All incoming seniors are to read A Time to Kill by John Grisham. The book is available in paperback at any major bookstore. Students need to complete their reading by the first day of school (Friday, August 15, 2008). This reading is mandatory for ALL seniors, and you will be tested over the book’s material on the first day of school.
As a supplement to their reading, seniors are also encouraged, but not required, to read the additional novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Seniors enrolled in Advanced Placement English IV will have additional reading assignments.
