Dear Prayer Partners,

The gospel message for this Sunday, while short, is one that takes a lifetime to practice. The two great commandments: love God above all and our neighbor as we love our self, while easy to say are difficult to practice. What comes first in my life when I am deciding on my daily schedule? Is my will and ease the determining factor for what I do with my time? Do I think that I will express my love for others in some kind of glorious act when it really comes down to loving in the "trenches" – the daily opportunities that are seemingly small but place others first? Each commandment takes conscious awareness and diligence to live well. May we pray for each other as we make this attempt.

Dear Prayer Partners,

I am writing these intentions on the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, the spiritual mother of all Carmelites. I believe that she can shed some light on Sunday's readings. She become convinced of the need for reform for her Carmelite community, and made the practice of prayer central to the reform. Prayer helps us discern what is of God that will help us be for God and what is of the world that we may let go because its distracts us from God. This choice is hard but necessary. We need to choose for God for attempting to live with a divided heart is not life giving. May you also grow in gratitude for all the gifts of life God shares with us.
