Bishop McGuinness students, parents, and teachers traveled to Piura, Peru in June for a service mission trip. The joy we all experienced on this journey was captured in this video by senior Becca Ray. We began our trip with a tour of the city of Lima, including the church and sanctuary of St. Rose of Lima. And then the true heart of our mission began. We reached Santisimo Sacramento parish in Piura, home of Fr. Joe Uhen, Bishop McGuinness alumnus. This would be our home base.
For the next week we participated in a variety of activities throughout local villages. We visited the girls at Hogar Madre del Redentor orphanage for fun and fellowship and they taught us how to play Kiwi. We taught English classes at the Madre de Buen Consejo school, led a Bible school in a village, helped distribute clothing and food, and built houses. We worked to make connections by playing with children, dancing at fiestas, holding babies so mothers could find clothing, and praying with people. We learned about teamwork, patience, and the importance of a good attitude and a smile. Our goal was to let go and let God work through us, to see the face of Christ in the people around us and to be the face of Christ for people wherever we could. It was truly a magical week!
